Each summer, a Swiss candidate – together with 99 international peers – gets to participate in the Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is a six-week research summer camp for well-versed high school students. It is organized by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) and hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The heart of RSI is a five-week research internship, during which the participants get to carry out university level science or engineering research under the tutelage of experienced researchers. They gain first-hand experience of how to conduct research as well as of how to translate findings into oral and written reports. In addition, RSI involves fascinating lectures given by distinguished professors (often even Nobel laureates), exciting excursions to companies and sights in the Boston area and many fun activities over the weekends.

Costs: The costs are normally covered by donations from Swiss foundations (we gratefully acknowledge the support of the Fritz-Gerber-Stiftung and the René & Susanne Braginsky Stiftung over the past years). In rare cases, a crowdfunding campaign is carried out. Traveling costs have to be paid by the candidate.
„This summer, I have had the incredible opportunity to attend the Research Science Institute (RSI) 2025, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I am extremely grateful to the FBK Bern Foundation for supporting my participation in this unique program.
Preparing for RSI was a journey in itself: I completed an online course in Python programming, read The Great Gatsby, and studied materials related to my future research project in visual attention. Since arriving in Boston, I have attended lectures from some of the most inspiring scientists and innovators, including experts in fields such as genetic engineering, quantum physics, and quantitative finance. I’ve also begun working on my mentorship project, which focuses on understanding how and why people sometimes fail to notice important visual information—errors that can have real-world implications in fields like radiology and security. Beyond academics, I’ve had the chance to explore Boston, take part in social activities with my fellow students, and build friendships with peers from around the world who share my passion for science.“
„Es war mir eine Ehre am RSI teilzunehmen und in diese wundervolle Gemeinschaft aufgenommen zu werden. Ich konnte neue Freundschaften mit Teilnehmenden mit ähnlichen Interessen aus verschiedenen Regionen der Welt bilden, und mit talentierten Mentoren und unglaublichen Persönlichkeiten zusammenarbeiten. Die Möglichkeit ein eigenes Forschungsprojekt durchzuführen und zu präsentieren war ein unglaubliches Erlebnis. Ich bin für die Unterstützung, die ich von der Organisation, auch nach RSI-Ende erhalte, extrem dankbar. Es ist definitiv eine einmalige und lebensverändernde Erfahrung.“
„Ich forschte an einem neuen Weg die Leistung von künstlichen neuronalen Netzwerken, welche heute von der Empfehlung von YouTube-Videos bis zur Früherkennung von Brustkrebs verwendet werden, zu verbessern. Namentlich kann ein Teil des Optimierungsprozesses dieser neuronalen Netzwerke deutlich effizienter gemacht werden, sofern das neuronale Netzwerk bestimmte Voraussetzungen erfüllt. Ich zeigte, dass ein neuronales Netzwerk dazu gebracht werden kann, diese Voraussetzungen zu erfüllen, ohne dass Leistung eingebüsst wird. Meine Arbeit wurde als bedeutend genug empfunden, dass ein Doktorant des MITs sie fortsetzen und auf ihr aufbauen wird.“
„Für mich persönlich war das Bilden neuer Kontakte und Freundschaften das grosse Highlight meiner Zeit am RSI. Immer noch finden wöchentlich mindestens zwei Videoanrufe mit anderen Teilnehmern statt.
Ich möchte hier ein grosses Kompliment an die Organisation aussprechen. Trotz der Umstände mit der Covid-19 Pandemie konnte ein RSI stattfinden, welches mich keine Sekunde gelangweilt oder demotiviert liess. Ich war und bin Teil einer Organisation, die mit Herzblut hinter ihrer Sache steht und die mit Herzblut alle zukünftigen «Rickoids» unterstützen wird.“
„Das Research Science Institut ist eine einmalige Erfahrung, die zahlreiche Vorteile mit sich bringt. Man ist hautnah an einem Forschungsprojekt beteiligt und lernt eine Menge darüber, wie man eine wissenschaftliche Arbeit schreibt und sie präsentiert. Was das RSI aber einzigartig macht, sind die Freundschaften mit Leuten aus aller Welt, die auf gemeinsamen Interessen und Erlebnissen beruhen, wie sie nur am RSI möglich sind.“
„RSI ist ein einmaliges Erlebnis! Man lernt in diesen sechs Wochen viele neue und interessante Personen und Dinge kennen. Auch die Chance, in einem Forschungsteam im Raum Boston eine eigene wissenschaftliche Arbeit verfassen zu können, ist unglaublich.“
„The Research Science Institute ist nicht nur Wissenschaft und Forschung, sondern auch Freundschaft und Spass. Neben dem Praktikum verbrachte ich viel Zeit mit den anderen Schülern. Insgesamt waren wir 80, 50 kommen aus den USA und 30 kommen aus der ganzen Welt. Es war sehr interessant andere Kulturen und Lebensstile zu entdecken. Wir trieben auch Sport wie Volleyball und Frisbee oder besuchten die Stadt Boston zusammen.“
